Over two weeks we’ll discuss the PADI Instructor Development process and go over the course performance requirements. The ability to pass the IE is a natural result of preparing to be an instructor. Don’t dwell on the IE, but concentrate on the larger task of becoming a professional educator and competent dive leader. This is sour main goal.
Beginning with online independent study through PADI eLearning and live-delivery segments, the IDC can be separated into an Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program.

Considerations

PADI Instructor Development Courses (IDCs) prepare candidates to function as PADI Assistant Instructors and Open Water Scuba Instructors. Candidates build on their instructor-level dive theory knowledge, role-model watermanship and rescue skills, and leadership abilities by learning how to teach in confined water, in the classroom and in open water. During the IDC, instructor candidates gain a complete understanding of PADI’s educational goals and philosophies.
You’ll find that your PADI Instructor Manual and PADI’s Guide to Teaching will be the two items you refer to most often through the course. However, you’ll need to have other PADI manuals, slates, videos and reference books readily available.
Your scuba equipment and exposure protection should be appropriate for the local area and be in good working order. Make sure that you streamline your equipment (secure hoses, etc.) in a role model manner.
Depending on the need or interest, training can be planned with breaks to gain more experience, or can be continuous all the way to instructor certification.

Prerequisites

Dive Leader certification — PADI Divemaster or leadership-level certification with a recognized recreational diver training organization*
18 years old
Medical clearance attesting to dive fitness signed by a physician within the previous 12 months.
Certified diver for six months.
EFR Primary and Secondary Care course completion (or qualifying training) within the last 24 months.
If not a PADI Divemaster, complete the PADI Divemaster course diver rescue skills assessment.
Submit documentation of qualifying certifications for entry level, advanced, rescue and leadership level, as necessary.
